Find open-source games and open remakes of classics to play
Made by Ivan Bobev
View profile on GitHub (opens in a new tab)This is a catalogue of video games whose source code is published, sorted into the genres a player would look under: action, adventure, city building, first-person, platformers, puzzles, racing, real-time strategy, roguelikes, role-playing, sandbox, shoot-em-ups, sport, tower defence and turn-based strategy.
It includes both games written as open source from the start and open re-creations of commercial titles, such as reverse-engineered versions of older console games, each with a one-line description and a link to where the code lives. There is nothing to install to browse it — it is a reading list you click through to find something to actually play.
You could use it to…
- Pick a free roguelike to play, no account needed
- Find an open remake of an old console game
- Browse games sorted by genre, with the source code linked

Worth knowing It is a list, so everything about quality, completeness and whether a given project still builds belongs to that project, not to this one — some entries are polished and finished, others are stalled experiments. Reverse-engineered remakes of commercial games are a legally unsettled area and several need original game data files you have to own. The list itself is dedicated to the public domain under CC0; every game on it has its own licence. BuildTube has not run or verified this software.
